With a marked sense of tradition, underpinned by essential modern developments, Pridwin Preparatory School in Melrose, Johannesburg, has established itself as one of the leading boys’ schools in South Africa.

With unfaltering dedication to the comprehensive education of every boy, Pridwin has struck the ideal balance between a modern, evolving world and the traditions and values on which the school was founded. In keeping with this, the school constantly upgrades its facilities and curriculum, to give boys every opportunity to make the most of their schooling and develop a solid foundation for their futures. Pridwin is a small, independent school, with only 408 pupils from Grades 0 to 7, which ensures individual attention for every child.

Christian values, which play a fundamental role in the daily running of the school, create a framework for the development of young men of distinction. These values build responsible, well-rounded, independent leaders and thinkers, who have a notable moral compass, and are capable and positive in their interactions and endeavours.

From Grade 0 to Grade 3, emphasis is placed on Numeracy, Literacy and Life Skills, which remains a focus throughout the primary school years.  A mentorship programme operates in the Foundation School, with the Grade 7 boys mentoring the younger members of the school through the “Big Brother” programme.

The highly qualified and dedicated educators at Pridwin discern the potential of each boy, and nurture this throughout their schooling, by encouragement and guidance. Education at the school is skills-based. The curriculum is bolstered by tours and outings that emphasise what is taught in the classroom. In addition to this, the school has specialist teachers in Physical Education, Computers, Music, Zulu, Afrikaans and French – a relatively unique subject at prep school level. The school is well-resourced, with further skills development being a priority. Access to three state-of-the-art computer centres, as well as the media centre is available to every child.

Pridwin School recently acquired a bank of iPads for use in the classroom. With all the teachers trained by Apple in the use of this exciting technology, and incorporating this medium into their lessons, it is adding a new dimension of learning within the school.

Pridwin offers an extended day for the Senior Primary, with the children staying at school until 16h30. After a nutritious lunch, there is supervised homework and thereafter, each boy participates in compulsory sporting activities. Extra-curricular time is spent constructively, with a number of sporting and cultural activities on offer.

The cultural world of the school is enriched by the Music, Art, Chess, Drama and Environmental Club departments. The Art exhibitions and Drama productions showcase the considerable talent within the school, while the Environmental Club helps build awareness and encourages involvement in a number of initiatives. The school has a particularly active Music department, and boys are offered private tuition in a number of Western and African instruments. The musicality of the school finds expression through the Jazz and Rock Bands, and through the Junior and Senior Choirs.

Pridwin sportsmen excel in a number of fields. Every boy is a member of a team that participates in sports’ matches, which are a fine test of the boy’s skills, in a fun environment. As a result of this sporting ethos, the sports teams are formidable opponents in competitions at all levels.

Values are further instilled in the Pridwin boy through the social responsibility initiatives that are an integral part of the school’s ethos. The children select a charity each term, and are pro-active in raising funds and collecting donations in a variety of ways. Pridwin has partnered with St Vincent’s School for the Deaf, which is located next door to the school. The close proximity encourages interaction between the pupils of both schools and the sharing of facilities. In addition to this, the Pridwin community actively helps to raise funds for much-needed improvements at St Vincent’s.
